Chapter 2: The Church That Has Departed from the Truth

The Reality of a Church No Longer Distinct from the World

Churches Embracing Homosexuality

The Church of England recently made a historic decision to officially allow priests to offer blessing prayers for same-sex couples who come to church seeking God’s blessing. According to The Christian Post, the vote passed with 36 in favor, 4 opposed, and 2 abstentions. Following the vote, the Church publicly acknowledged,

“We have failed to welcome the LGBT community and have caused them harm. We must lament and repent.”

While bishops and clergy noted that offering such prayers is “entirely optional,” they also insisted that this move “should not contradict or depart from the doctrine of the Church of England.”

The decision came on the heels of a report suggesting that the denomination is “considering teaching that God is gender-neutral.” A spokesperson for the Church defended the idea, stating,

“Referring to God in gender-neutral terms is not entirely new.”

In light of this, the Church of England also announced that it is exploring the possibility of no longer referring to God using male pronouns. Furthermore, a formal request has been made within the denomination to begin adopting gender-neutral language in official worship and liturgy.

Churches Supporting Abortion

In a move that has shocked many, the United Church of Christ (UCC) passed a resolution urging its member churches to actively support and assist individuals seeking abortions. The resolution passed with overwhelming support.

According to The Christian Post, during the 34th General Synod of the UCC, delegates voted to condemn the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization — the ruling that overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. The resolution, which called on the denomination to publicly support abortion rights, passed with 611 votes in favor, 24 against, and 13 abstentions.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6–3 decision that abortion is not a constitutional right, effectively reversing nearly 50 years of precedent.

Additionally, the UCC resolution called on the church’s pastoral support team to provide emergency funds to help cover travel costs for individuals who cannot access abortion services in their home states — allowing them to obtain abortions elsewhere.

The Privatization and Commercialization of the Church

In commemoration of the 507th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, Shalom Nabi, a Christian reform movement in South Korea (led by Dr. Young-Han Kim), issued a statement calling for the Korean Church to restore its integrity and return to the faith of the cross.

In a commentary released on the 28th, the group urged the Church to humbly acknowledge and repent of the growing issues of privatization, materialism, and money-based appointment practices within the institutional church. They emphasized the need for reform and a return to the true essence of the Church.

The statement strongly criticized the widespread culture of wealth-driven leadership, hereditary succession in pastoral roles, and the entrenched expectation of “offering for office” — the practice of requiring monetary donations in exchange for church positions like elder or deacon.

“In some churches, individuals are expected to give offerings in order to be appointed as elders or deacons. This practice of buying and selling church offices closely resembles the corruption of the medieval Catholic Church,” they warned.

The statement drew a direct comparison to the abuses Martin Luther denounced during the Reformation, declaring that

“The spirit of religious commercialism that Luther condemned is sadly being repeated in today’s Korean Church.”

It concluded with a strong call to

“Repent of money-centered practices, including appointment offerings, and restore the holiness and sacred calling of the Church.”

Prayer Points

1. In this time of crisis and despair caused by the Church’s moral collapse, now is the time to return to the Lord. Let us repent of our pride and complacency that led us to compromise with the world and tolerate sin. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts, and let us turn to the Lord in humility — seeking His mercy and forgiveness.

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”
(Isaiah 55:6–7)

Scripture & Prayer

Let us begin by reading and meditating on today’s passages.

Colossians 2:8–15 (NIV)
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.
11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

2 Timothy 4:1–4 (NIV)
1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.
3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Let us now reflect on these passages and share what we have personally realized through meditating on God’s Word.

Let us now respond in prayer as God’s Word leads us.

1. As we witness the state of many churches around the world today—following after hollow philosophy, deceptive traditions, and the elementary principles of this world—we cannot help but grieve. This is not the true image of a Church that follows Jesus Christ. The Church that has died and been raised with Christ must turn away from former sins and the desires of the flesh and live in the fullness of Christ. Let us pray that the Lord, who has already crushed the head of Satan, would now overcome the sins exposed within the Church through the power of the Cross, and graciously restore His Church upon the unshakable foundation of the victorious Gospel.

2. The influence of human traditions, worldly philosophies, and empty deception has deeply infiltrated today’s Church. But this is not the Church that follows Christ. We have died and risen with Him, and we are called to leave behind all that belongs to the sinful flesh and live in His fullness. Let us pray that the Lord, who triumphed over Satan at the Cross, would now overcome the compromised Church through that same Cross, and raise up the global Church once more, firmly rooted in the victorious Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“Through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth, God chose you for salvation.”
(2 Thessalonians 2:13–14)

“Christians Must Not Recklessly Participate in the Spread of Homosexuality”

On October 16, the Korea Church Media Association (Rev. Eok-Joo Lee, President) issued a statement titled:
“Christians Must Not Recklessly Participate in the Spread of Homosexuality.”

The statement expressed serious concern over a recent ruling by South Korea’s Supreme Court, which officially recognized the eligibility of same-sex partners for dependent status under the national health insurance system.

“This ruling,” they warned, “will only empower the pro-LGBT movement and accelerate the normalization of homosexuality.”

They further noted that since July, certain progressive civic organizations and supportive legal advocacy groups have launched a joint legal campaign to push for the legalization of same-sex marriage — filing lawsuits on behalf of 22 same-sex couples.

“Our Constitution does not recognize same-sex marriage,” the statement emphasized.

What’s more troubling, the group added, is that

“Some legal professionals — those who should know the law best — are leading this charge. This undermines our legal system, destabilizes the institution of the family, and threatens the moral fabric of our society.”

They warned that while a few individuals may choose to live as same-sex couples, the attempt to legislate homosexuality is a separate and dangerous issue.

The Media Association identified the root of the problem as stemming from the “Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Bill,” which has been debated in Korean society for over a decade.

“This bill aims to prevent criticism of homosexuality and force public approval of same-sex marriage,” they said,
“and the ideological basis for such efforts comes from the National Human Rights Commission Act passed under the 15th administration.”

The statement continued:

“These forces do not stop at same-sex marriage. They also promote abortion, radical human rights claims, and anti-discrimination campaigns — all of which threaten the sanctity of life, the value of the family, and the very foundation of the Church, which gathers around families.”

They also rebuked the silent complicity of some progressive pastors, seminarians, and Christians, saying,

“They are like dry wood doused in the oil of homosexuality — adding fuel to moral corruption.”

The Association firmly opposed the push for a legal framework that would allow anti-discrimination laws to suppress those who oppose homosexuality:

“The proposed laws must be stopped by the collective will of discerning citizens.”

Finally, they called for unity through a national gathering:

“The Korean Church must rise to defend the truth. The October 27 ‘United Worship of the Korean Church’ is desperately needed. Around the world, societies are in turmoil over the LGBTQ agenda, and faithful believers are facing growing persecution for standing on conscience and faith.”

“The law should serve as a minimum standard of morality. Morality must align with a God-given conscience. But homosexuality seeks to erode even that — undermining conscience, morality, and the very laws that protect society.
Preventing this is now the urgent, God-given responsibility of the Korean Church.”
(Source: Christian Daily Korea)

Prayer

Lord, what was once too shameful to even speak of — homosexuality — is now not only socially accepted but even being pushed into law.
We see efforts to legalize same-sex marriage and to silence all opposition through anti-discrimination legislation. The storm is fierce.

But the Korean Church must not retreat. Wake up those Christians who, in the name of inclusion or protecting minorities, have aligned themselves with the spirit of this age instead of the truth of Your Word.
Remind us that You have called us through the Gospel — to be sanctified by the Spirit and saved through belief in the truth.

Let us not participate in the sins of this world. Help us turn from all unrighteousness.

As we urgently gather for the October 27 “United Worship of the Korean Church,” pour out Your mercy upon this land. Accept our repentance. Destroy the schemes of Satan, and let Your will be done in our nation.

Prayer Focus 2: [United States]

“Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.”
(Psalm 34:11)

1 in 6 U.S. Christians Have Been Involved in Abortion — A Call for Biblical Worldview Education

According to a recent study, one in six Christians in the United States has been involved in an abortion.
The Christian Post reported that Barna Group, in partnership with the Center for Biblical Worldview at Family Research Council (FRC), surveyed 1,009 American adults who attend church regularly. The survey, conducted in June, aimed to assess attitudes toward social issues and personal worldviews.

The abortion-related findings were particularly eye-opening:

  • 16% of respondents said they had either paid for, encouraged, or personally chosen to have an abortion.
  • About 65% said they believe the Bible teaches when human life begins, but 35% disagreed or were unsure.
  • Only 35% agreed that “abortion should never be permitted under any circumstance.”
  • 19% believed abortion should only be allowed when the mother’s life is at risk.
  • 10% said the decision should be left up to the couple.
  • 6% supported abortion in all situations.

David Closson, Director of the Center for Biblical Worldview at FRC, emphasized the importance of these findings:

“The data shows that even among Christians, there is a wide range of beliefs about abortion. This confirms the urgent need for continuous education in biblical worldview—especially when it comes to the sanctity of life.”

Closson added:

“It’s shocking to learn that about 17% of women who attend church regularly have had an abortion, and 15% of men have paid for or encouraged one. This aligns with a 2015 LifeWay Research study, which found that 16% of women who had abortions identified as evangelical Christians.”

Using the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) as a representative example, he noted:

“In 2023, the SBC had 13.2 million members across 47,198 churches. If we apply the 16% figure, that means approximately 2.1 million Southern Baptists have participated in abortion in some form.”

The survey also included responses about other social issues.

  • 75% of respondents agreed that the Bible clearly defines marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman.
  • 69% said the Bible teaches clearly on religious liberty.
  • 66% said it also provides clear guidance on divorce.

Prayer

Lord, though we may call ourselves Christians, we confess that many of us have lived by our own thoughts and desires, ignorant or indifferent to Your Word — and we have sinned.

Forgive us, Lord. Awaken the Church to teach believers with boldness and clarity from a biblical worldview. Let the Holy Spirit bring conviction every time the Word is taught, so that we may truly fear You, the Giver of Life.

Help us deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Christ. Let the world, through the transformed lives of Your people, come to recognize the sinfulness of its ways and return to the path of life.

May we show through our obedience that true blessing is found not in worldly freedom, but in keeping and living Your Word.
