1. “말씀을 실천했더니 그 말씀이 마음에 들러붙었어요” I practiced the Word, and it stuck to my heart.

 

<어느 날 북쪽의 한 독실한 기독교인이 선교 본부 중 한 곳에 찾아왔다. 평범하게 인사를 나눈 뒤 그에게 방문한 목적을 물었다. 그의 대답은 이랬다. “제가 성경 구절을 조금 외워 왔는데요, 목사님 앞에서 그 구절들을 암송하려고 찾아왔습니다.” 그는 수백 마일이나 떨어진 곳에 살고 있는데 그 먼 거리를 나흘 밤이 걸려 오로지 걸어서 왔다고 했다. 자신의 목사 앞에서 성경의 몇몇 구절들을 암송하기 위한 그 긴 여정에도 불구하고, 그는 한국어로 단 한 글자의 실수도 없이 산상수훈 전체를 암송하여 들려주었다. 나는 그에게 단순히 구절을 암기하는 것이라면 그것은 암기하는 재주일 뿐 그 이상의 아무것도 아니며, 말씀의 가르침은 실천해야 하는 것이라고 말해 주었다. 그는 곧바로 얼굴에 환한 미소를 띠면서 “바로 그것이 제가 배웠던 방법입니다. 말씀을 외우려고 노력했지만, 도무지 들러붙지를 않았어요. 그래서 이런 계획을 세우게 되었습니다. 한 구절을 외우고 나면 신앙이 없는 이웃에게 찾아가서 그 말씀을 실천하는 거예요. 그러자 그 말씀이 제 마음에 들러붙었다는 사실을 발견했어요.”라고 대답하였다.>

One day, a devout Christian from the North came to one of the mission headquarters. After exchanging a simple greeting, he was asked the purpose of his visit. His answer was this: “I’ve memorized some verses from the Bible, and I came to recite them before you, Pastor.” He lived hundreds of miles away and had walked for four nights just to get there. Despite the long journey he made solely to recite a few Bible verses before his pastor, he proceeded to flawlessly recite the entire Sermon on the Mount in Korean without a single mistake.

I told him that merely memorizing verses was nothing more than a feat of memory, and that the teachings of the Word must be practiced. Immediately, his face lit up with a bright smile as he replied, “That’s exactly the method I’ve learned. I tried to memorize Scripture, but it just wouldn’t stick. So I came up with this plan: whenever I memorized a verse, I would go to a non-believing neighbor and practice it with them. Then I found that the Word really began to take root in my heart.”

기독교인의 삶이란 무엇인가? 기독교인으로 사는 삶의 목적과 본질, 과정을 정확하고 완전하게 설명할 수 있는 가장 간단한 방법은 무엇인가? 기독교인의 삶이란 말씀을 듣고 행하는 삶이다. 예수님은 “그러므로 누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는 그 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람 같으리니”라고 말씀하신다. 예수께서 “나의 이 말”이라고 말씀하신 것은 매우 직접적으로 마태복음 5장부터 7장에 걸친 산상수훈을 가리키고 있다.

What is the life of a Christian? What is the simplest way to clearly and completely explain the purpose, essence, and process of living as a Christian? The life of a Christian is a life of hearing and doing the Word. Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” When Jesus referred to “these words of mine,” He was speaking very directly about the Sermon on the Mount, which spans Matthew chapters 5 through 7.

사실 위에서 언급된 ‘북쪽에서 온 독실한 기독교인’과 같은 수많은 한국의 초기 기독교인들이 붙잡혀간 것이 바로 이 구체적인 말씀 때문이다. 예수님은 “너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와 이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라”고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 “모세와 모든 선지자의 글로 시작하여 모든 성경에 쓴바 자기에 관한 것을 자세히 설명”하셨다.

In fact, it was precisely this specific teaching that led many early Korean Christians—like the devout believer from the North mentioned earlier—to be arrested and taken away. Jesus also said, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.” And “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”

요한계시록 5장에서도 사도 요한은 두루마리, 즉 하나님의 말씀을 보게 된다. 힘 있는 천사가 “누가 그 두루마리를 펴며 그 인을 떼기에 합당하냐”고 묻지만, 요한은 “하늘 위에나 땅 위에나 땅 아래에 능히 그 두루마리를 펴거나 보거나 할 자가 없더라”고 말한다. 성경은 아담의 자녀들이 이해할 수 없도록 완전히 봉인되어 있다. 그랬기 때문에 요한이 울었던 것이다. 성경은 그리스도와 서로 뗄 수 없는 관계를 지니고 있다. 마찬가지로 그리스도 역시 성경과 서로 뗄 수 없는 관계를 지닌다. 

In Revelation chapter 5, the apostle John sees a scroll—that is, the Word of God. A mighty angel asks, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But John observes, “No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.” The Scriptures are completely sealed from the understanding of Adam’s children. That is why John wept. The Bible is inseparably connected to Christ, and likewise, Christ is inseparably connected to the Scriptures.

기독교인의 삶이 말씀을 듣고 행하는 것이라는 말은 기독교가 성경 공부를 하는 삶이라는 뜻이 아니다. 성경은 뭔가를 억지로 얻어내듯이 연구하거나 조사하거나 정통할 수 있는 대상이 아니다. 성경은 오직 드러날 뿐이며, 그것을 드러낼 수 있는 유일한 분은 그리스도이시다. 그리스도는 오직 그분의 방식으로 그분의 목적을 위해서만 성경을 드러내신다. 그분이 성경을 드러내시는 것은 곧 삼위일체를 드러내는 것이다. 성경에서는 그 외의 어떤 것도 드러나지 않기 때문이다. 하나님은 그분을 열심히 찾는 모든 이들에게 자신을 드러내시며, 그분을 받아들일 수 있게 틀림없이 우리를 변화시켜 주신다. 그 변화는 우리가 듣고 행하는 이 두 가지 모두를 실천할 때 일어난다. 하나님은 그 두 가지의 결합을 통해서 당신을 나타내신다.

Saying that the Christian life is one of hearing and doing the Word does not mean that Christianity is merely a life of Bible study. The Bible is not something we can master through analysis, investigation, or mere expertise-as though forcing something out of it. The Bible is only revealed. And the only one who can reveal it is Christ Himself. Christ reveals the Scriptures solely in His way, and for His purpose. When He unveils Scripture, He is revealing the Trinity—for nothing else is revealed in the Bible apart from that. God reveals Himself to all who earnestly seek Him, and He surely transforms us to receive Him.

That transformation happens only when we practice both hearing and doing. God reveals Himself through the union of these two acts.

B. 이제 말씀이 결론이 되도록 기도하겠습니다.

보이지 않는 하나님은 성경의 말씀을 통해 자신을 계시하신다. 성경을 주신 목적은 말씀을 듣고 순종함으로 하나님을 누리게 하신 것이다. 우리는 말씀이 실제 될 때 얼마나 놀라운 하나님을 경험하게 되는가! 우리가 말씀을 읽고 들을 뿐만 아니라 실제 행함으로 하나님 나라의 놀라운 복과 생명을 누리자. 이 영광을 사탄에게 빼앗기지 않고 말씀을 사랑하는 예수교회가 되도록 기도하자.

 

The invisible God reveals Himself through the words of Scripture. The purpose of giving us the Bible is that, by hearing and obeying the Word, we may enjoy God Himself. How amazing is the experience of encountering God when His Word becomes reality in our lives! Let us not only read and listen to the Word, but also live it out—so that we may partake in the wondrous blessings and life of the Kingdom of God. Let us pray that we become Jesus Churches who love the Word, never allowing Satan to steal this glory from us.

성경은 오직 예수 그리스도를 드러낸다. 예수 그리스도를 믿고 영생을 얻는 것이 성경을 주신 유일한 목적이며 이유이다. 교회가 성경을 말하고 가르치지만, 성경을 통해 예수 그리스도의 복음을 만나지 못한다면 참으로 비극적인 일이 아닐 수 없다. 성경을 통해 길과 진리와 생명 되신 예수님을 만나며 십자가 복음의 은혜와 사랑을 경험하는 놀라운 일들이 일어날 것이다. 오직 성경을 사랑하며 예수 그리스도의 복음만을 증거하여 이 땅에 놀라운 구원의 역사가 일어나도록 기도하자

The Bible reveals only Jesus Christ. The sole purpose and reason for which the Scriptures were given is so that we may believe in Jesus Christ and receive eternal life. It is truly tragic when the church speaks and teaches the Bible, yet fails to encounter the gospel of Jesus Christ through it. When we meet Jesus—the way, the truth, and the life—through the Scriptures, amazing things will happen: we will experience the grace and love of the cross-centered gospel. Let us pray that we become a people who love the Scriptures and testify to the gospel of Jesus Christ alone, so that a great work of salvation may arise in this land.

2. 성경을 읽고 외우고 그 가르침을 문자 그대로 따랐다They read and memorized the Bible and followed its teachings literally.

 

한국 기독교인 1세대의 굉장히 중요한 초점은 바로 성경이다. 그래서 당시 한국에 갓 도착한 외국인 선교사들은 그들의 종교를 일컬어 ‘성경 기독교’ 라고까지 묘사하였다. 한국 기독교인 1세대는 외국인 선교사들에 의해 개종한 사람들이 아니었다. 그들은 자신이 읽은 성경이나 그 성경을 몰래 들여온 권서인을 통해 개종하게 되었다. 그리고 그 권서인들 역시 이제 막 기독교로 개종한 이들이었다.

One of the most defining focal points of the first generation of Korean Christians was the Bible. So much so that some of the early foreign missionaries who had just arrived in Korea described their faith as “Bible Christianity.” The first generation of Korean Christians were not converts made directly by foreign missionaries. Rather, they converted after reading the Bible themselves or through colporteurs who had smuggled Bibles into the country. And many of those colporteurs had only recently become Christians themselves.

한국 기독교인 1세대들에게 성경을 읽는 것은 단지 생활 가운데 존재하는 다양한 기독교 활동 중 하나가 아니었다. 성경을 읽는 것이 곧 그들의 삶이었다. 그들에게 사경회(성서 강해와 연구에 집중된 집회)란 목사나 유명 강사가 이끄는 특별한 연례행사가 아니었다. 그것은 한국 기독교인들이 입문하게 된 ‘성경이라는 낯설고도 새로운 세계’를 통해 삶의 방법을 찾으려는 노력으로써 그들 각자가 실천하던 일상적인 경험이었다. 

For the first generation of Korean Christians, reading the Bible was not merely one of many Christian activities woven into daily life—it was their life itself. For them, *sa-kyung-hoe* (Bible study gatherings focused on in-depth reading and exposition) were not rare annual events led by pastors or famous preachers. Rather, they were ordinary, daily practices—intentional efforts by individuals to find ways of living through the unfamiliar and newly discovered world of the Bible into which they had entered.

한국 기독교인들이 일단 성경을 자신의 신성한 책으로 받아들이자, 성경은 다른 것들을 초월한 권위로 숭배를 받았다. 학생들은 유교적 방식으로 성경을 읽었다. 즉, 본문을 소리 내어 읽고 외우고 암송하였으며, 그런 다음에는 일상의 윤리 및 도덕적 지침과 사회, 정치적 원칙의 문제들 속에서 그 가르침을 문자 그대로 따랐다. 사람들은 성경 본문이 한국의 상황에서 타당한지에 대한 비판적 평가나 고려 없이 성경을 권위 있는 말씀으로 받아들였다.

Once Korean Christians embraced the Bible as their sacred book, they revered it with a transcendent authority. Students read the Bible in the Confucian tradition: they read it aloud, memorized it, recited it, and then applied its teachings literally to ethical and moral questions in daily life, as well as to social and political matters. People accepted the authority of the biblical text without subjecting it to critical evaluation or questioning its relevance in the Korean context.

We have to take on this one singular task with the same passion, focus, surrender, and loyalty that the early Korean Christians had toward God—committing ourselves with the full depth and breadth of a Christian life.

1. 한국 기독교 초기 신자들은 외국인 선교사를 통해 복음을 받은 것이 아니었다. 놀랍게도 이미 번역되어 전해진 성경을 읽고 실천함으로 복음을 깨닫고 하나님을 믿게 되었다. 그들은 말씀을 읽고 외우며 깨닫기 위해 열심을 내었고, 진지하게 자신의 삶에 말씀을 실천했다. 지금도 우리가 베뢰아 성도들과 같이 간절한 마음으로 성경을 받아 읽고 외우며 생명의 말씀을 대할 때 놀라운 부흥의 역사를 보게 될 것이다. 한국과 열방의 교회들이 다시 성경으로 돌아가 말씀대로 믿고 행하는 예수교회로 세워지도록 기도하자.

1. The first generation of Korean Christians did not receive the gospel through foreign missionaries. Amazingly, they came to believe in God by reading and practicing the gospel already translated and distributed through Scripture. They were passionate about reading, memorizing, and understanding the Word, and they earnestly applied it to their lives. Even now, when we receive the Bible with eager hearts like the Berean believers—reading, memorizing, and engaging the Word of Life—we will witness a remarkable revival. Let us pray that the churches in Korea and throughout the nations will return to Scripture and be established as Jesus Churches that believe and act according to the Word.

2. 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 기록된 하나님의 말씀이며, 시대를 초월한 하나님의 권위를 가지고 있다. 오직 성경을 통해서 우리는 하나님을 알 수 있다. 오늘날 세상은 하나님을 무시하고 성경을 대적하며, 유일무이한 진리를 거짓으로 치부하며 공격한다. 이때는 말씀으로 세상을 이기는 믿음의 증인들이 일어나야 한다. 나와 우리 교회가 하나님을 경외하고 이웃을 사랑하여 성경을 나눠주며, 복음을 전하는 전파자들이 되도록 기도하자.

The Bible is the Word of God, written by divine inspiration, and it carries the authority of God that transcends time. It is only through the Scriptures that we can truly know God. Today, the world disregards God, opposes the Bible, and attacks the one and only truth, labeling it as falsehood. In this generation, witnesses of faith must rise up—those who overcome the world by the Word. Let us pray that we, and our churches, will fear God, love our neighbors, distribute Bibles, and become proclaimers of the gospel.

에릭 폴리 목사 “한국교회, 북한 지하교회 방식 배워야” Pastor Eric Foley: “The South Korean Church should have to Learn from the Underground Church in North Korea”

 

‘한국 순교자의 소리(VOM)’의 CEO 에릭 폴리(Eric Foley) 목사가 최근 ‘북한 기독교 총연합회(북기총)’가 주최한 탈북민 목회자 연합 여름수련회에서 설교하며 “한국교회의 개척 방법 대신 북한 지하교회의 개척 방법을 숙달해 남한과 북한에 적용하라”고 탈북민 목회자들에게 촉구했다고 한국 VOM이 24일 전했다.

Pastor Eric Foley, CEO of Voice of the Martyrs Korea (VOMK), recently preached at a summer retreat for North Korean defector pastors hosted by the United Christian Association of North Korea. According to a VOMK report on the 24th, Pastor Foley urged them, “Master the church planting method of the North Korean underground church, not the methods used in South Korea, and apply them both in the South and in the North.”

이에 따르면 에릭 폴리 목사는 “몇십 년 전 소련이 붕괴되었을 때 서양 선교사들이 서양식 교회 개척 방법을 갖고 러시아로 몰려들었다. 서양 선교사들은 공산주의와 러시아 지하교회 모두가 실패한 것처럼 잘못 행동했지만, 사실 영적으로 보면 당시 러시아 지하교회는 서양 교회보다 더 강했다”고 했다.

He explained, “When the Soviet Union collapsed decades ago, Western missionaries flooded into Russia with Western-style church planting strategies. They acted as if both communism and the Russian underground church had failed. But spiritually, the Russian underground church at that time was stronger than the Western church.”


이어 폴리 목사는 “한국의 기독교를 북한 사람에게 전하라고 하나님께서 여러분을 부르신 것이 아니다. 북한 지하교회는 패배하지 않는다. 회개와 부흥이 필요한 교회는 한국교회”라고 말했다.

그는 “한국교회는 영적인 힘을 상실했다. 한국교회는 4대에 걸친 공산주의자들의 핍박 속에서 하나님 말씀의 불씨가 꺼지지 않게 신실하게 지켜온 북한 지하 기독교인의 발밑에 앉아 배워야 할 것”이라고 탈북민 목회자들에게 주장했다.

Pastor Foley went on to say, “God has not called you to bring South Korean Christianity to the North Korean people. The underground church in North Korea is not defeated. It is the South Korean church that needs repentance and revival.”

He told the North Korean defector pastors, “The South Korean church has lost its spiritual power. It must sit at the feet of North Korean underground Christians, who have faithfully kept the flame of God’s Word alive through four generations of communist persecution, and learn from them.”

Pastor Foley also stated, “According to most statistics, while the underground church in North Korea has continued to grow steadily despite severe persecution, the South Korean church has experienced a decline in membership over several decades.” He described the North Korean underground church as “a church built on the model of John Ross,” and the South Korean church as one “built on the methods of Appenzeller, Underwood, and Allen.”

그리고 “존 로스의 방식은 교회와 관련된 모든 기관, 곧 선교사들이 개척한 모든 기관이 파괴된 와중에서도 북한 지하교회가 살아남게 해 준 원동력이 됐다. 존 로스의 북한 지하교회는 초기 기독교인들로부터 물려받은 것 중 어떤 것도 잃지 않았다”라고 했다.

He added, “Even when every institution related to the church—those established by missionaries—was destroyed, John Ross’s approach allowed the underground church in North Korea to survive. The North Korean church following John Ross’s model has not lost a single inheritance passed down by the early Christians.”

폴리 목사는 “한국에서 기독교에 대한 적대감이 커지고 있기 때문에 한국교회는 존 로스의 ‘오직 성경’ 방법에 점점 더 의존해야 할 것”이라며 “예수님은 지금부터 그가 다시 오실 때까지 우리가 세상의 미움을 더 많이 받으면 받았지, 더 적게 받지는 않을 것이라고 경고하셨다”라고 했다.

Foley concluded, “As hostility toward Christianity grows in South Korea, the church here must increasingly rely on John Ross's 'Scripture-only' approach. Jesus warned that from now until He returns, we will be hated by the world more and more—not less.”

마지막으로 폴리 목사는 “북한 기독교는 ‘성경 기독교인’으로 불렸던 초창기 한국 기독교인들의 진정한 후계자다. 하나님께서 지금 목사와 신학교, 안수와 교단, 인도적 지원 방식의 봉사 전략, 커피숍을 바탕으로 한 서양식 기독교를 한국교회에서 가지치기하고 계신다”고 말했다.

Lastly, Pastor Foley said, “North Korean Christianity is the true heir of the early Korean Christians who were once called ‘Bible Christians.’ God is currently pruning the South Korean church of its Western-style Christianity—centered on pastors, seminaries, ordination systems, denominations, humanitarian service strategies, and café-based ministries.”

그는 “하나님께서는 북한 지하교회가 한국 기독교를 정결하게 하고 소생시킬 뿐 아니라 북한 지하교회야말로 ‘통일의 교회(the church of unification)’가 되기를 바라고 계신다”고 전했다

He continued, “God desires not only for the North Korean underground church to purify and revive South Korean Christianity, but also for it to become the church of unification.”

은혜의 하나님, 예배와 양육, 전도 등에 어려움을 겪고 있는 한국교회에 북한 지하교회의 방식을 배우라 말씀해 주시니 감사합니다. 북한에 복음을 전해 온 ‘한국 순교자의 소리’ 폴리 목사가 탈북민 목회자들에게 설교한 것이지만, 남한의 교회에도 주님의 말씀으로 들려지게 하옵소서. 북한교회는 극심한 박해에도 꾸준히 성장했으나, 남한의 교회는 인적·물적 자원이 풍부함에도 교인들이 감소한 상황 앞에 겸비하여 주님의 마음으로 받게 하소서. 남한의 목회자와 성도 모두가 성경을 읽고 묵상하여 주님의 교훈과 책망, 바르게 함과 의로 교육함을 받으며 순종하게 하옵소서. 그리하여 북한교회와 같이 환난과 궁핍 가운데서도 부요하며 죽도록 충성하는 교회가 되게 하시길 기도합니다.

Gracious God, we thank You for speaking through Pastor Foley of Voice of the Martyrs Korea, reminding the South Korean church to learn from the underground church in North Korea, especially in this time of hardship in worship, discipleship, and evangelism. Although the message was directed to defector pastors, may it also be received by the South Korean church as Your Word.  

While the underground church in North Korea has grown steadily under harsh persecution, the South Korean church—with its abundance of human and material resources—has seen its membership decline. Help us to humbly receive this reality with Your heart. May both pastors and believers in South Korea return to the Scriptures—reading, meditating, and obeying Your instruction, rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness.  

Just as the North Korean church remains rich in spirit amid tribulation and poverty, may the South Korean church also become one that is faithful to the point of death and receives the crown of life.
