『Declaration of the Gospel Prayer Alliance』 – Background and Purpose

 

교회는 복음을 모르는 사람들에게 복음을 전하는 통로이다. 교회는 다시 오실 예수 그리스도의 대위임령을 수행하고 인류에 대한 하나님의 목적을 완성하기 위해 하나님의 방식으로 선택된 곳이다. 그리고 교회는 하나님의 사람들을 거룩하게 하기 위해, 훈육하기 위해, 그리스도의 장성한 분량에 이르기까지 성숙하게 하기 위해 성령이 역사하시는 현장이기도 하다(엡4:13, 5:17). 그러나 이 땅의 교회는 아직 불완전한 모습이다.

도전받는 예수 그리스도의 유일성과 성경의 권위
종교 다원주의와 포스트모더니즘 시대에 예수 그리스도의 유일성에 대한 도전이 더 분명하게 나타나고 있다. 기독교계 내부에서조차 하나님이 아닌 어떤 신을 믿더라도 구원을 받을 수 있다는 보편구원론이 표면화되고 있다. 심지어 스스로 복음주의자라고 생각하는 그리스도인들조차 하나님 말씀의 권위와 무오성에 관해서 뚜렷한 확신을 갖지 못하고 세상과 타협하는 일이 빈번하게 나타나고 있다. 신자들의 생각, 가치, 세계관은 성경보다는 문화, 철학, 미신 혹은 지역 종교에 의해 형성되고 있다. 이러한 경향으로 신자들의 삶은 진리를 믿는 믿음이 아닌 하나님을 개인의 문제해결과 소원성취를 위한 도구로 사용하는 번영신학적인 모습으로 변질되기도 한다.

점점 늘어나는 명목상의 그리스도인
교회는 다니지만 그리스도인의 모습과는 거리가 먼 명목상의 그리스도인들. 이들은 서구뿐 아니라, 전 지구적으로 기독교화된 많은 나라들에서조차 점점 늘어나고 있다. 서유럽 지역 국가 중 거의 대부분의 국가는 이들로 인해 재복음화 대상국가로 전락해 버렸다. 안타깝게도 많은 그리스도인들이 개인의 신앙, 죄에 대한 진정한 회개, 살아계신 하나님과의 관계 등에 대해 정말 무지하다. 많은 명목상의 그리스도인들이 하나님의 값없는 은혜의 선물을 누리며 기도하기보다는 선행의 결과가 구원을 얻는 방법이라고 여기고 있다.

그러나 이 땅을 향한 하나님의 마음은 지금도 여전히 그분의 교회를 통해 전달되고 있다. 마치 구약시대에 다 망해가는 이스라엘 한가운데에 선지자들을 세우고 반드시 외쳐야 할 메시지를 남김없이 쏟아부으셨듯이. 그렇다면 이 땅 가운데 여전히 굳게 서 있는 증인 된 교회를 주목하고 우리의 관심을 기울여보자. 또 우리 세대의 남은 과업을 향해 초점을 옮기고자 한다.

전 세계에서 증가하는 박해받는 그리스도인과 미완성 과업
기독교인들은 세계 많은 곳에서 박해의 대상이 되고 있으며 그 수는 점점 증가하고 있다. 성경은 이미 믿는 자들은 세상에서 미움을 받고 고난과 박해를 받을 것을 말씀하고 있다. 오히려 이상히 여기지 말라고 하셨다. 의인에 대한 박해는 불가피하며 박해와 고난은 교회를 정결하게 한다. 죽음도 이기는 승리하는 교회는 원수를 두렵게 한다. 이슬람 세계에서는 최근 급진 이슬람의 무자비한 살인과 테러로 혐오감과 환멸감을 가진 무슬림들이 기독교로 개종하고 있다. 이러한 신자가 급격히 늘어나고 있으며 신자들은 가혹한 압박과 죽음까지 직면하면서 더욱 견고해지고 있다. 서서히 흐르던 구원의 물줄기가 이제는 거센 강물이 되어 흐른다. 미전도 종족의 전체 인구는 32억 명이며, 인류의 42%에 이른다. 가장 고립되고 복음을 듣기 어려운 지역에 살고 있는 이들에게는 하나님의 부르심을 받은 사역자들의 선교를 통해 복음을 접해야 하고, 최소한 그 민족들 가운데 교회가 세워져야 한다.

복음의 응전
역사의 위기와 고비 때마다 주님이 회복하신 것은 말씀(언약, 복음)이었다. 그에 따른 하나님 백성들의 반응은 말씀에 순종하는 것과 말씀이 성취되도록 기도하는 것이었다. 그 결과는 하나님의 하나님 되심이 드러나는 하나님 나라의 부흥이었다. 하나님 나라가 부흥될 때 하나님의 이름이 열방 가운데 알려지게 된다. 열방에도 하나님의 나라가 이루어지는 선교완성을 위해서 하나님은 일하신다. 반드시 선교가 완성된다는 역사의 결론을 성취하시기 위해 하나님은 예수 그리스도를 통한 십자가 복음을 예비해 놓으셨다.

이 영원한 십자가 복음으로 인해 역사는 그 의미와 방향을 지니게 되었으며 우리의 생애 역시 분명한 목적과 안정감을 찾게 된 것이다. 오직 영원하며 완전한 십자가 복음으로 인해 하나님을 사랑함으로 신뢰와 순종의 삶을 사는 새 생명(예수 생명)의 길이 열린 것이다. 하나님과 우리의 영원한 사랑의 결속, 이것이 언약의 최종 목적인 것이다.

다시 복음 앞에
한국교회는 선교사 파송 2만 명 시대를 넘어 미국에 이어 선교사 파송국가 2위를 차지할 만큼 급격히 성장하였다. 그러나 이 같은 외형적 성장 이면에 한국교회의 사회적 신뢰도는 낮고 세속화와 물질화, 영성과 신앙의 약화라는 평을 받고 있다.

기가 막힐 웅덩이에 빠져 허우적거리던 한반도, 잃어버린 바 된 이 땅의 민족을 찾아오신 하나님의 은혜가 베풀어진 지 140여 년. 그 후손인 우리는 음란한 여인 고멜처럼 그 한량없는 은혜를 저버리고 바알을 섬기며 건포도 과자를 즐기며 패역하여 여호와 하나님을 떠났다.

진실도 없고 인애도 없고 하나님을 아는 지식도 없고, 오직 저주와 속임과 살인과 도둑질과 간음뿐이며 포악한 이 땅의 인생들을 사랑하사 ‘언약갱신’을 결정하신 주님이 그 뜻을 선포할 것을 명령하신다.

‘오라 우리가 여호와께로 돌아가자 여호와께서 우리를 찢으셨으나 도로 낫게 하실 것이요 우리를 치셨으나 싸매어 주실 것임이라’(호6:1)

‘우리가 여호와를 알자 힘써 알자 그의 나타나심은 새벽 빛 같이 어김없나니 비와 같이, 땅을 적시는 늦은 비와 같이 우리에게 임하시리라’(호6:3)

오늘날 한국교회와 열방의 교회들의 믿음의 현주소를 살펴보면 ‘위기’라 할 수 있겠다. 그러나 이것이 결론일 수 없다. 우리는 주님이 제시해 주신 복음과 기도를 붙잡고 하나님 나라의 부흥과 선교완성을 위해 전쟁하는 자로 연합할 것을 다짐하며 우리의 믿음과 삶이 된 행동양식을 선언문에 담아 천명한다.

The Church is a channel through which the gospel is proclaimed to those who do not know it. It is the divinely chosen means to fulfill the Great Commission of the returning Jesus Christ and to complete God's purpose for humanity. Moreover, the Church is where the Holy Spirit works to sanctify God’s people, to discipline them, and to mature them until they reach the full measure of Christ (Ephesians 4:13; 5:17). Yet the Church on earth remains imperfect.

The Uniqueness of Christ and the Authority of Scripture Under Challenge  
In this era of religious pluralism and postmodernism, the uniqueness of Jesus Christ is being challenged more explicitly. Even within the Christian community, universalist theories that claim salvation is possible through belief in any deity have become increasingly visible. Disturbingly, even self-identified evangelicals often lack a clear conviction about the authority and inerrancy of Scripture, leading to frequent compromises with the world. The thoughts, values, and worldview of believers are more often shaped by culture, philosophy, superstition, or regional religions than by the Bible. As a result, many believers’ lives are no longer rooted in faith in the truth but are influenced by a prosperity gospel that uses God as a tool for personal fulfillment and problem-solving.

The Rise of Nominal Christians
Those who attend church but live far from the identity of true Christians are increasing not only in the West but globally—even in countries heavily influenced by Christianity. Most Western European nations have now become mission fields in need of re-evangelization because of this trend. Many believers are shockingly unaware of personal faith, genuine repentance of sin, and relationship with the living God. Instead of enjoying the free gift of God’s grace through prayer, many nominal Christians believe salvation can be earned through good deeds.

Still, God's heart for this world continues to be expressed through His Church. Just as He raised prophets in decaying Israel to deliver unfiltered messages, God is today calling His faithful witness-bearing churches to attention. Our focus must now turn to the unfinished tasks of our generation.

The Increase of Persecuted Christians and the Unfinished Mission
Christians are increasingly being persecuted across the globe. Scripture already warns that believers will be hated, suffer, and face persecution—and that we should not be surprised. Persecution is inevitable for the righteous and serves to purify the Church. The victorious Church that overcomes death itself terrifies its enemies. In Islamic regions, many Muslims disillusioned by the violence and terrorism of radical Islam are converting to Christianity. Despite harsh persecution and the threat of death, their faith is growing stronger. The once slow trickle of salvation is now a rushing river. An estimated 3.2 billion people—about 42% of humanity—remain unreached. These isolated people must be reached through the work of missionaries and see churches planted among them.

The Gospel Response
In every historical crisis or turning point, what God restored was His Word—the covenant, the gospel. The people’s response was obedience and prayer for the fulfillment of the Word. The result was revival and the revelation of God's sovereignty. As the Kingdom of God is revived, His name is proclaimed among the nations. God is at work to fulfill the completion of missions and the establishment of His Kingdom among the nations. To accomplish this historical conclusion, God has prepared the gospel of the cross through Jesus Christ.

Through this eternal gospel of the cross, history gained its meaning and direction, and our lives found purpose and security. The eternal and perfect gospel of the cross opened the way of new life—a life of trust and obedience through loving God. The eternal bond of love between God and us is the final purpose of the covenant.

Back to the Gospel 
The Korean Church has grown rapidly, now sending more than 20,000 missionaries and ranking second only to the United States in missionary sending. Yet despite such visible growth, Korean churches face criticism for low social trust, secularization, materialism, and weakened spirituality.

It has been over 140 years since God's grace visited the Korean peninsula—a people lost in sin and wandering in the mire. But like the unfaithful wife Gomer, we have forsaken this immeasurable grace, worshiping Baal and indulging in worldly pleasures, abandoning the Lord God.

There is no truth, no love, no knowledge of God in the land. Only curses, deceit, murder, theft, and adultery abound. And to this rebellious people, God commands the proclamation of a renewed covenant.

“Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but He will heal us; He has injured us but He will bind up our wounds.” (Hosea 6:1)  
“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3)

The present condition of faith in the Korean Church and churches around the world may be labeled a crisis. But this cannot be the conclusion. Holding fast to the gospel and prayer that the Lord has given, we resolve to unite as warriors for the revival of God's Kingdom and the completion of world missions. We now proclaim this way of faith and life in the form of a declaration.

Is the life of eternal salvation, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ-the only begotten Son of God, who came to this earth as the Creator of the heavens and the earth and Lord of all creation-and the present state of the Church truly sufficient as it is? We proclaim that the Gospel and Prayer alone are the foundational principles by which we Christians live. We declare ourselves as the Gospel Prayer Alliance Army. And we resolve once again to return to God.

그 은혜로 인해 우리는, 오류 없는 복음을 단지 인정하고 고백하는 명목상의 그리스도인이 아니라 내주하시는 성령으로 말미암아 ‘예수 생명’을 살아내도록 거듭난 자로서, 십자가가 유일한 삶의 이유요 자랑이고, 복음이 전부이며 주님 한 분이면 충분한 복음의 증인이 되었습니다.

By His grace, we are no longer nominal Christians who merely acknowledge and confess an error-free gospel. Rather, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have been born again to live the “Jesus life.” The cross has become our only reason for life and our sole boast; the Gospel is everything, and the Lord alone is enough. We are now witnesses of this Gospel.

Complete death to self and the world is evidenced by the resurrection life united with Christ. Let us pray that all impurities that hinder us from standing in faith in Christ and denying ourselves daily will be removed, and that witnesses of the Gospel who wholly participate in the death and resurrection of the cross will be raised up.

1. The dream and desire of God are the same for us who now live the Jesus life. Let us pray that all these truths may be inscribed deeply upon our hearts. Let us pray that we will become a house of prayer for all nations, never silent day or night, and be prepared as the Bride ready to welcome the glory of that day.

1. Let us praise the glory of the gospel’s power that has made us one, though we could never have become one on our own. Let us pray to guard the unity of the Spirit diligently, breaking the schemes of Satan that sow division and distrust. May we understand the heart of our Father God, who delights in the unity of brothers, and advance the Kingdom of God as the Gospel Prayer Alliance united in love.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

십자가로 모든 정사와 권세를 무력화하시고 승리하신 십자가의 승리를 매 순간 바라보고 찬양하자. 보이는 상황으로 우리를 두렵게 하는 모든 사탄의 간계를 대적하고, 오직 말씀과 기도로 싸우며 전쟁하는 하나님의 군대로 일어서게 해주시길 기도하자.

Let us continually look to and praise the victory of the cross, by which Christ disarmed all rulers and authorities. Let us pray that we may stand as God’s army—fighting not with fear stirred by visible circumstances, but resisting every scheme of Satan with the Word and prayer.
